Texas Desert Town to Host World’s First 3D-Printed Hotel

Marfa, TX – In a groundbreaking development, El Cosmico, a renowned hotel and campground in the Texas desert town of Marfa, is making history with the construction of the world’s first 3D-printed hotel.

Partnership with ICON and Bjarke Ingels Group

El Cosmico has partnered with Austin-based 3D printing company ICON and acclaimed architects from the Bjarke Ingels Group to bring this innovative project to life. The expansion will feature 43 new hotel units and 18 residential homes spread over 60 acres.

Revolutionary 3D Printing Technology

Using ICON’s cutting-edge Vulcan printer, the project utilizes a proprietary cement mixture called Lavacrete, tailored for the desert’s varying climate. The 3D printing process allows for unique curves and structures that would be cost-prohibitive with traditional building methods.

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly

This innovative construction method pioneers sustainable hospitality, reducing waste and environmental impact. El Cosmico’s owner, Liz Lambert, highlighted the unprecedented flexibility of 3D printing, enabling creative and sustainable building.

Concerns Over Labor Displacement

Experts warn that 3D printing could impact skilled labor jobs in remote areas. Milad Bazli, a science and technology lecturer, noted that while 3D printing offers opportunities, its social and economic implications must be considered.
