UN Warns of Further Mass Displacement in Ukraine if Energy Infrastructure Targeted

GENEVA, Nov 15 – The United Nations has warned that additional Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure could lead to a new wave of mass displacement as winter approaches.

Matthias Schmale, the U.N. Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, highlighted the growing vulnerability of civilians as the war enters its third winter. He expressed concerns that renewed strikes on Ukraine’s energy sector could trigger a “tipping point,” displacing even more people both within Ukraine and across its borders.

Currently, over 3.6 million people remain displaced inside Ukraine, while more than 6 million have fled to neighboring countries since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. The threat of further displacement comes at a time when donor fatigue is setting in, and the humanitarian situation continues to worsen.
