UK to Sign Deals to Stop Illegal Migrants

LONDON — The UK is planning to sign agreements with countries like Turkey, Vietnam, and Iraqi Kurdistan to stop illegal migrants from reaching Britain, according to the Sunday Times. These deals are similar to those made by Italy, where money is given in exchange for countries working to prevent migrants from leaving.

Italy has reduced migrant crossings by 62% after signing agreements with Tunisia and Libya. Tunisia received money and patrol boats to help stop migrants, while Libya’s coast guard was trained by Italy. However, these deals have faced criticism over the treatment of migrants in those countries.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised Italy’s approach when he met with Italian leaders in September. He believes it’s better to prevent people from leaving their countries than trying to stop them once they’ve arrived in the UK.

The number of people crossing the English Channel illegally has been rising. By November 2024, over 32,000 people had made the crossing, more than in all of 2023. The UK government is focused on stopping the criminal gangs behind these crossings.

In addition to Turkey, the UK wants to work with Iraqi Kurdistan, where many trafficking gangs operate. Earlier this year, a major trafficker was arrested in Iraq.

Any deals would likely involve funding for local security forces and may include plans to return migrants who reach the UK.
