UAE Enforces Stricter Traffic Laws: Jail, Fines Up to AED 200,000 for Violations
Abu Dhabi – On Friday, the UAE government unveiled a new set of traffic regulations aimed at significantly boosting road safety, with stricter penalties for offenses like jaywalking, hit-and-runs, and driving under the influence. The law, which takes effect on March 29, 2025, includes fines, jail sentences, and other deterrents to encourage safer behavior among road users.
Key Highlights of the New Law
- Severe Penalties for Jaywalking
- Crossing roads from non-designated areas now carries stricter consequences. Although the current fine for jaywalking stands at AED 400, the new law will impose fines of AED 5,000 to AED 10,000, or even imprisonment if jaywalking leads to a traffic accident.
- In high-speed zones (80 km/h or more), jaywalkers face harsher punishments, with possible jail time of at least three months or fines starting from AED 10,000.
- Hit-and-Run Incidents
- Drivers involved in hit-and-run incidents will face heavier repercussions under the new regulations, with fines reaching up to AED 200,000 and potential jail terms. This approach reflects the UAE’s commitment to protecting pedestrians and ensuring accountability for dangerous driving.
- Reckless and Drug-Impaired Driving
- The revised law imposes severe penalties for reckless driving and driving under the influence of drugs, including fines, vehicle impoundment, and jail time. These regulations target behaviors that pose a serious risk to road users.
The enhanced penalties represent the UAE government’s dedication to reducing traffic accidents and protecting both pedestrians and drivers. The new measures are intended to make roads across the UAE safer, discouraging risky behavior and encouraging compliance with traffic rules.
