U.S. and Poland Open New NATO Missile Defense Base

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A new NATO missile defense base in northern Poland was officially opened on Wednesday, with both U.S. and Polish officials celebrating the move as a boost to security amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The base, which is part of NATO’s missile defense system, was originally planned to protect Europe from potential threats, such as missiles from Iran. However, Poland sees it as a vital defense against Russia, especially since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Russian officials have strongly opposed the base, calling it a threat to their military power. Despite this, Polish leaders welcomed the base, calling it a significant step in strengthening NATO’s presence in Eastern Europe.

Poland’s President Andrzej Duda said the base sends a clear message that Russia no longer controls the region. “This is the most important thing for Poland strategically,” he said.

Poland’s Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz also praised the base, calling it a major event in Poland’s security history. He highlighted the importance of having strong air defenses in light of ongoing conflicts like the war in Ukraine.
