Transgender Population in Pakistan Declines Over Seven Years, Census Reveals
The latest data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics has shown a decline in the number of transgender individuals in the country over the past seven years. According to the 2023 census, the total number of transgender persons in Pakistan is now 20,331, down from 21,774 in 2017. This marks a decrease of 1,443 individuals in just seven years.
The breakdown of the transgender population across various regions in Pakistan is as follows:
- Punjab: 13,957
- Sindh: 4,222
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 1,117
- Baluchistan: 765
- Islamabad: 270
The figures reflect ongoing challenges faced by the transgender community, including social, economic, and legal barriers, which may contribute to the decline. This drop raises concerns about the visibility, rights, and protection of transgender individuals in the country.
