Sri Lankan President’s Coalition Wins Large Majority in General Election

COLOMBO, Nov 15 – Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s leftist coalition secured a decisive victory in a snap general election, giving him a strong mandate to implement his plans to combat poverty and corruption in the country, which is still recovering from a severe financial crisis.

The coalition’s victory was bolstered by unexpected support from the northern and eastern regions of the island, home to the minority Tamil population. This widespread backing marks a historic shift in Sri Lanka’s political landscape, signaling broad national agreement on the need for change and reform, according to analysts.

With the election result, Dissanayake now has the political power to push forward his agenda, which aims to address the country’s economic challenges and promote greater social equity.
