Sri Lanka Win Rain-Shortened ODI to Take 1-0 Lead Over New Zealand

13 November 2024: Sri Lanka defeated New Zealand in a rain-affected ODI to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The match was reduced to 27 overs per side, and New Zealand’s chase of 221 fell apart after they lost five wickets for just 22 runs in less than five overs.

Kusal Mendis was named Player of the Match for his solid century, supported by Avishka Fernando, who also scored a hundred. The pair guided Sri Lanka to a competitive total, despite being short one bowler.

Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka said, “We wanted to bowl tight overs and put pressure on the batsmen. The rain made things difficult, but our bowlers handled it well.”

In New Zealand’s reply, they started well but struggled after losing two key wickets. Mitchell Santner, New Zealand’s captain, acknowledged the challenge: “Losing set batsmen in these conditions made it tough. We tried to keep attacking, but it wasn’t enough.”

Theekshana played a key role in New Zealand’s collapse, taking two wickets in a crucial over. “I was in the right place at the right time,” he said, reflecting on his performance.

Sri Lanka’s win means they lead the series 1-0, and New Zealand will need to win the second ODI in Pallekele on Sunday to keep their hopes alive.
