Sri Lanka Holds Snap Election to Test New Leadership
Sri Lanka has held snap parliamentary elections, just seven weeks after the inauguration of its new president, marking a significant moment for the country’s political future.
More than 8,800 candidates contested the election, which was characterized by a quiet campaign. Voters cast their ballots from 07:00 local time (01:30 GMT) until 16:00 (10:30 GMT), and the results are expected to be released on Friday.
The election is for 225 seats in Sri Lanka’s parliament. Out of these, 196 members will be directly elected, while the remaining seats will be allocated based on proportional representation, according to the percentage of votes each party receives.
This snap election is seen as a key test for the newly elected president’s leadership, as Sri Lanka continues to face economic and political challenges. The outcome of this election will have a significant impact on the future direction of the country.
