Sri Lanka Dominate New Zealand to Claim 1-0 Series Lead
Colombo, Sri Lanka – Sri Lanka’s spinners wreaked havoc on New Zealand’s batting line-up, bowling the visitors out for just 135 to give the hosts a commanding 1-0 lead in their series.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, New Zealand struggled against a relentless spin attack. Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana were the standout performers, with both spinners picking up crucial wickets to set the tone for the innings. Sri Lanka’s bowlers claimed a total of six wickets between them, as the Kiwis were dismissed in just 39.4 overs.
Charith Asalanka’s composed knock of 58* was the highlight with the bat, leading Sri Lanka to a comfortable total after they were set a modest chase. Asalanka, along with crucial contributions from the lower order, steered Sri Lanka home with plenty of overs to spare.
Daryl Mitchell’s 34 was the lone resistance for New Zealand, but his efforts were not enough as Sri Lanka’s bowlers maintained tight control throughout the innings.
The victory puts Sri Lanka in a strong position as they look to extend their lead in the second match of the series, scheduled for Colombo.
