SIM Card Crackdown: PTA Targets Expired ID Cards

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has launched the second phase of its campaign to eliminate illegal SIMs, targeting users with expired ID cards. In a statement, PTA officials warned citizens to renew their ID cards to avoid SIM blocking.

The first phase saw the blocking of SIMs linked to fake IDs and canceled ID cards, resulting in over 69,000 illegal SIMs being shut down since August 16. The PTA is using data from NADRA to identify and block illegal SIMs.

In the next phase, SIMs registered in the names of deceased individuals will be closed. To minimize disruptions, awareness messages are being sent to users before SIMs are blocked.

The PTA emphasizes that fake SIMs are being used in various illicit activities, including terrorism and financial fraud. By cracking down on illegal SIMs, the authority aims to enhance national security and prevent criminal activities.”
