Seven Friends Discover Historic Treasure in England
In January 2019, seven friends found a significant treasure while exploring the Chew Valley in Southwest England with metal detectors. They discovered 2,584 silver coins that date back almost 1,000 years.
The coins, valued at $5.6 million, are the most valuable treasure ever found in the UK. Half of the auction money will go to the treasure hunters, and the rest will go to the landowner where the coins were found.
The South West Heritage Trust purchased the coins, and they will be displayed next month at the British Museum in London. The coins were minted between 1066 and 1068 and feature the names of three rulers from that time.
Treasure hunters Lisa Grace and Adam Staples, part of the group, said this discovery fulfilled a long-held dream. Many people in the UK search for treasures using metal detectors, with 1,378 treasures discovered in 2022 alone.
