Rare Lizard Spotted in Saudi Arabia’s Northern Borders Region

RIYADH, Nov 12 — A rare lizard species, Savigny’s agama (Trapelus savignii), has been spotted in Saudi Arabia’s Northern Borders region, the state news agency SPA reported.

The lizard was found in the Arar desert, where the environment has plenty of plants and natural reserves, creating a good habitat for wildlife.

Adnan Khalifta, a wildlife expert, said the lizard is medium-sized with a flat body, a broad head, and a long tail covered in spiky scales. It is active during the day and feeds on insects. The lizard lives in rocky areas and climbs shrubs and rocks to stay cool in the hot desert.

Male Savigny’s agamas turn blue on their head, neck, and sides during mating season, while females do not have this color. This lizard is rare in the region, where the variety of landscapes supports a rich mix of wildlife.
