Prominent Indigenous Rights Advocate Marcelo Perez Murdered in Chiapas

Catholic Priest and Activist Marcelo Perez Killed After Sunday Service in Mexico

Chiapas, Mexico: Pastor Marcelo Perez, a prominent Catholic priest and leader of indigenous and labor rights, was tragically shot dead by armed men on motorcycles as he left Sunday services. Perez, known for his decades of work defending the rights and dignity of Chiapas’ indigenous tribes, was a symbol of resistance and a tireless advocate for true peace in the region.

The killing comes during a surge of violence in Chiapas, where 500 people have been killed between January and August this year. The state governor condemned the murder as a cowardly act, mourning the loss of a “sincere person” and vowing to bring the criminals to justice.
