PML-N Minister Deletes Anti-Trump Tweets After 2024 Win

Ahsan Iqbal, a key minister from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), deleted a series of old tweets criticizing former U.S. President Donald Trump after his projected victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The deleted tweets, which sparked controversy on social media, reflect Iqbal’s previous skepticism of Trump’s political approach.

The tweets, dating back to 2016, included comparisons between Trump and Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan, highlighting the similarities in the rhetoric of both politicians. One tweet expressed surprise at the similarities between Trump’s and Khan’s followers, while another referenced Khan’s rise to power, calling him “Pakistan’s Trump.”

In 2016, Iqbal also tweeted, “We have one in Pakistan too. He will be shown way out soon. Insha Allah!” referring to Khan, who later became Prime Minister in 2018.

The tweets resurfaced after Trump’s re-election in 2024, sparking debates on social media. Iqbal’s deletion of the posts suggests he might want to distance himself from his past comments, especially now that Trump’s re-election could influence global politics.

Observers have noted the irony of the situation, as Iqbal, part of the ruling PML-N, may want to avoid alienating voters or party members who still support Trump’s political style.

Iqbal’s recent comments about Trump’s defeat in the 2024 election, calling it a blow to “demagogues and dictators,” sharply contrast with his earlier praise of Trump’s political influence, reflecting a shift in his perception of global populist movements.
