PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi Reiterates Stance on Equal Terms in Cricket
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has emphasized that cricketing decisions between Pakistan and India must be based on equality, declaring that “it is unacceptable for Pakistan to play in India while the Indian team refuses to visit Pakistan.” He made these remarks during a late-night visit to Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, where he reviewed the progress of its renovation projects ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Key Points Highlighted by the PCB Chairman
Opposition to the Hybrid Model
Naqvi stated that if decisions regarding the ICC Champions Trophy or other matters go against Pakistan, the PCB will consult with the government and act in the best interest of the country. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s rejection of the hybrid model proposed for international cricket and stressed that any decisions will be made with the nation’s dignity in mind.
Gaddafi Stadium Renovation
The chairman inspected the new seating stands and other upgrades at Gaddafi Stadium, expressing satisfaction with the progress. He set a target to complete the construction by the end of December 2023, ensuring the venue is fully prepared for the Champions Trophy. The stadium’s seating capacity will be increased from 34,000 to 40,000, providing fans with an enhanced experience.
ICC Champions Trophy Preparations
Naqvi reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to hosting the Champions Trophy, stating that “we will not disappoint the nation.” He assured that the tournament preparations are in full swing and pledged to field the strongest possible team for the event.
Equality in Cricket
While speaking to the media, Naqvi declared that the era of one-sided decisions in cricket is over. He emphasized that all decisions must now be based on parity, rejecting any notion of financial compromises for unfair arrangements.
Rawalpindi Stadium Concerns
Naqvi also expressed regret about delays in the Rawalpindi Stadium renovation, stating that timely reports could have improved the situation.
Looking Ahead
The ICC Board meeting, scheduled for Friday, will discuss the Champions Trophy and potentially revisit the hybrid model. Pakistan has maintained its firm stance against such compromises, and any decision contrary to its position will prompt consultation with the government.
Naqvi concluded optimistically, stating that Pakistan cricket is entering a promising era and assured fans of a bright future for the sport in the country.
