Over 1.2 Million Evacuated as Super Typhoon Man-yi Hits the Philippines
MANILA — More than 1.2 million people have been evacuated in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Man-yi strikes the country, the sixth major storm in just a month.
The typhoon hit the island of Catanduanes in the Bicol region on Saturday evening, with the national weather agency warning of “catastrophic and life-threatening” conditions.
So far, there have been no reports of casualties from Man-yi, but heavy rain and strong winds are expected to cause flooding and landslides, especially in the coming days. The typhoon is moving toward other parts of the Philippines, including central Luzon and northern Quezon.
In Catanduanes, the worst-hit area, many houses were destroyed, and power outages have affected nearly the entire island.
The Philippines is regularly hit by storms, with about 20 typhoons each year. These storms are becoming more extreme due to climate change. In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan killed over 6,000 people and caused widespread damage.
