Lahore Tops Global Pollution Index as Smog Reaches Hazardous Levels

Lahore is currently grappling with severe smog, placing it at the top of the list as the most polluted city globally. The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has dangerously surged to 1067, with certain areas like DHA reaching as high as 1319, and the American Consulate area recording an AQI of 1007.

This hazardous air quality is causing significant health issues, including respiratory problems and eye irritation among residents. Health experts have advised people to wear masks and protective eyewear when venturing outdoors, and those particularly vulnerable—such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions—are urged to remain indoors.

With no rain forecasted, the smog is expected to persist, worsening the air quality further in the coming days. Medical experts recommend drinking plenty of water and using air purifiers indoors to reduce exposure to pollutants. Senior environmental officer Jahangir Anwar expressed concern over the unprecedented pollution levels, noting that AQI reaching over 1000 is a first for Lahore, and the situation may remain critical for the next three to four days.
