Kusal Mendis’ Heroics Seal Sri Lanka’s Historic Series Win Over New Zealand

Pallekele, Nov 17 – Kusal Mendis played a match-winning knock of 74* as Sri Lanka defeated New Zealand by three wickets in the second ODI, clinching their first series win against the Kiwis since 2012. With the victory, Sri Lanka sealed an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Set a modest target of 210 in a rain-affected 47-over game, Sri Lanka battled through a slow pitch, with New Zealand’s spinners applying constant pressure. Mendis anchored the chase with a calm, unbeaten 73, sharing a crucial 47-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Maheesh Theekshana (27*). Despite a strong performance from Michael Bracewell, who took 4 for 36, Sri Lanka held their nerve to cross the line in the 47th over.

Earlier, New Zealand posted 209 all out, largely thanks to Mark Chapman’s 76 and Mitchell Hay’s 49. Sri Lanka’s spinners, led by Theekshana (3 for 31) and Jeffrey Vandersay (3 for 35), restricted the visitors, with Asitha Fernando contributing two wickets. The brilliant fielding effort by Sri Lanka, including several key catches, was also crucial in their dominant bowling display.

This win marks a historic achievement for Sri Lanka, securing their first ODI series victory over New Zealand in over a decade.
