The Punjab Cabinet has approved significant amendments to the Prohibition of Kite Flying Act 2007. The revised law makes flying, making, and transporting kites with metal strings, wire, tindi, and braided strings non-bailable offenses. Kite flyers can face imprisonment for 3 to 5 years or a fine of Rs 20 lakh, or both. Failure to pay the fine can lead to an additional year of imprisonment.
Kite makers and transporters can face imprisonment for 5 to 7 years or a fine of Rs 50 lakh, or both. Non-payment of the fine can result in an additional 2 years of imprisonment. For children, the first offense will result in a warning, followed by a fine of Rs 50,000 for the second offense, Rs 1 lakh for the third offense, and imprisonment under the Juvenile Justice System Act, 2018, for the fourth offense.
