Justice Yahya Afridi Officially Nominated as Chief Justice of Pakistan by Special Parliamentary Committee

Islamabad: In a historic move following the implementation of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, a special parliamentary committee has nominated Justice Yahya Afridi as the new Chief Justice of Pakistan. The nomination was approved by a two-thirds majority, with eight members of the committee endorsing Justice Afridi, while Jamiat Ulema Islam’s Senator Kamran disagreed. Notably, three members—Senator Ali Zafar, MNA Hamid Raza, and Barrister Ali Gohar—were absent from the meeting.

This appointment marks the first time that the Chief Justice of Pakistan has been selected by a parliamentary committee, as opposed to the traditional seniority-based system. The meeting included prominent figures like Raja Pervez Ashraf, Farooq H. Naik, Syed Naveed Qamar, Ahsan Iqbal, and others.

Federal Minister for Planning, Ahsan Iqbal, confirmed Justice Yahya Afridi’s nomination in a statement, signaling a new era in judicial appointments.
