India’s Ruling BJP Set to Gain in Key State Elections, Exit Polls Show

MUMBAI – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies are projected to have a strong lead in two significant state elections, according to exit polls released on Wednesday. This could provide a much-needed boost to Modi following a disappointing general election earlier this year.

The BJP and its allies are expected to secure more seats than their rivals in the elections for the state assemblies of Maharashtra, India’s wealthiest state, and Jharkhand, known for its mineral-rich resources. While the BJP currently governs Maharashtra, it is in the opposition in Jharkhand.

Voting for both state legislatures concluded today, and the results will be counted on Saturday. While exit polls, conducted by private agencies and TV broadcasters, often have a mixed track record in India due to the country’s vast and diverse electorate, they suggest a favorable outcome for Modi’s party.

Earlier this year, Modi’s party lost its parliamentary majority in the national elections held between April and June, forcing it to rely on unstable alliances to form a government. However, the BJP’s unexpected win in Haryana’s state elections last month has given the party a renewed sense of momentum heading into these crucial state polls.
