Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula Erupts for Seventh Time in a Year
A volcano on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula erupted for the seventh time since December, continuing the region’s ongoing volcanic activity. The eruption, which began late Wednesday at 11:14 p.m., created a fissure approximately 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) long.
According to Iceland’s meteorological office, the eruption is smaller compared to previous events, including the significant eruption in August and one earlier in May.
While there is no immediate threat to air travel, authorities have warned about gas emissions affecting parts of the peninsula, including the nearby town of Grindavík. In response, around 50 homes were evacuated, and guests at the Blue Lagoon resort were also relocated.
The volcanic activity has caused significant damage to infrastructure and property, forcing many residents of Grindavík, a town located about 50 kilometers (30 miles) southwest of Reykjavik, to temporarily relocate for safety.(AP)
