ICC Sentences Malian Islamist to 10 Years for Role in Timbuktu Repression
The International Criminal Court (ICC) sentenced Malian Islamist Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz to 10 years in prison for his involvement in enforcing sharia law in Timbuktu after its capture by militants in 2012. The 47-year-old was part of the Islamic police force set up by the Ansar Dine group, responsible for public floggings and severe psychological harm to victims and witnesses. Judges highlighted his central role in the brutal repression during the city’s occupation.
