German Court: Facebook Users Eligible for Compensation Over Data Breach

BERLIN – A German court ruled on Monday that Facebook users whose data was illegally accessed in 2018 and 2019 are entitled to compensation. The Federal Court of Justice (BGH) stated that the loss of control over personal data online is grounds for damages, even without proof of specific financial harm. The decision comes as thousands of German Facebook users seek compensation from parent company Meta for insufficient data protection, following a breach where third parties accessed accounts by guessing phone numbers.
