French Interior Minister Criticizes PSG Fans’ “Free Palestine” Banner
Paris, Nov 7 (Reuters) – French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has condemned the display of a giant “Free Palestine” banner by fans of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) before their UEFA Champions League match against Atletico Madrid. Retailleau called the act “unacceptable” and stated that he would seek to “demand explanations” from the football club.
The controversial banner was unveiled by the Paris Ultras Collective (CUP), a hard-core fan group, before the match kicked off at the Parc des Princes stadium on Wednesday. Retailleau’s criticism adds to the ongoing debate in France over the role of sport and political statements in public events, especially amidst the heightened sensitivities surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
PSG has yet to respond publicly to the Minister’s comments or provide an official statement regarding the incident.
