Floods in Malaysia Displace Over 37,000 Across Six States

This week, torrential rains have caused widespread flooding in six Malaysian states, affecting more than 37,000 people, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim informed parliament on Thursday.

Temporary shelters have been set up to house the displaced population, with 322 facilities established across Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Perlis, Johor, and Perak. The northeastern state of Kelantan, which shares a border with Thailand, has borne the brunt of the disaster. According to Anwar, 30,582 individuals from 9,223 families have been affected in Kelantan alone.

Emergency response teams are working to manage the crisis, while government agencies coordinate relief efforts to provide food, shelter, and medical assistance to the displaced. The situation remains critical, and authorities continue to monitor water levels and weather patterns to mitigate further risks.

Flooding during Malaysia’s monsoon season is a recurring issue, often resulting in widespread displacement and significant damage to property and infrastructure. The government has called for national solidarity and urged the public to remain vigilant as recovery efforts are underway.
