FBR Withdraws Proposal to Ban Passengers from Bringing More Than One Mobile Phone

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has halted the implementation of a proposal to restrict passengers from bringing more than one mobile phone from abroad. This decision comes after FBR Chairman ordered the immediate reversal of proposed amendments to the Customs Baggage Rules 2006.

🟢 Previous Proposal

  • On Monday, FBR issued a notification to amend the baggage scheme, aiming to ban the import of commercial quantities of items by passengers.
  • Under the new rules, only one mobile phone for personal use was to be allowed for passengers arriving from abroad.

🟢 Current Status

  • Following public backlash, the Chairman of FBR has now ordered the withdrawal of the proposed amendments.
  • As per the existing rules from 2006, travelers are still allowed to bring two mobile phones from abroad for personal use.
  • The decision also included the reversal of the proposal to ban commercial items valued over $1,200, with instructions for further consultation before reintroducing any such amendment.

🟢 What’s Next?

The FBR has stated that the proposal will be reviewed and re-evaluated after further consultation with stakeholders. For now, travelers can continue to bring up to 2 mobile phones without any additional restrictions.

This reversal is seen as a relief for overseas Pakistanis and travelers, as the earlier decision had sparked criticism for being too restrictive, especially for those bringing essential devices for family members or personal use.
