FAFEN Report Exposes Election Tribunals’ Inefficiency

The latest report from FAFEN reveals some concerning statistics about Pakistan’s election tribunals. Out of 377 identified petitions, only 40 have been disposed of, which translates to a mere 11% resolution rate . This is particularly alarming given that many cases have already expired, surpassing the 180-day deadline stipulated by the Election Act .

Breaking down the numbers by region, we see that Baluchistan tribunals have performed relatively well, disposing of 28 out of 51 cases . However, other provinces haven’t fared as well. In Punjab, only 2 out of 155 cases have been decided, with 8 newly established tribunals still pending hearings . Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Sindh have also seen limited progress, with disposal rates of 4 out of 42 and 6 out of 86 cases, respectively .

Disposal Rates by Province:

  • Balochistan: 28/51 (55%)
  • Punjab: 2/155 (1.3%)
  • KP: 4/42 (9.5%)
  • Sindh: 6/86 (7%)

Case Outcomes:

  • Approved: 3
  • Dismissed: 37
  • Pending: 297 (out of 377 identified petitions)
