Europe’s New Migration Frontline as Migrant Arrivals Surge

VALVERDE, Spain – El Hierro, a small island in Spain’s Canary Islands, has become the latest hotspot in Europe’s efforts to combat irregular migration. This year, the island has seen nearly twice as many migrants as its entire population.

In late October, a group of 30 teenagers from Mali and Senegal arrived on the island. Dressed in soccer shirts and wearing headphones, they walked across the quiet town square of Valverde, as a few locals observed silently. This surge in arrivals marks El Hierro’s growing role as a key destination for migrants seeking to reach Europe.
