England’s Gus Atkinson Takes Test Cricket Hat-Trick Against New Zealand
During the ongoing second Test match between New Zealand and England, English fast bowler Gus Atkinson achieved a remarkable feat by taking a hat-trick. With this performance, he became the 15th English fast bowler to complete a hat-trick in Test cricket.
Atkinson’s impressive spell saw him bowl 8.5 overs, conceding just 31 runs while claiming 4 wickets. He completed his first Test hat-trick by dismissing all-rounder Nathan Smith, Matt Henry, and former captain Tim Southee.
Meanwhile, opening batsman Devon Conway also made his mark in the match by securing his first wicket, dismissing a player for 11 runs from 27 balls.
It’s worth noting that South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj was the last player to take a Test hat-trick in 2021, when he took the wickets of Kieran Powell, Jason Holder, and Joshua Da Silva.
Before Atkinson, England’s Moeen Ali was the last player from the team to achieve a Test hat-trick, doing so in July 2017 at The Oval when he dismissed Dean Elgar, Kagiso Rabada, and Morne Morkel.
With this hat-trick, Atkinson’s achievement marks the 50th Test hat-trick in cricket history—47 in men’s Test cricket and 3 in women’s Test cricket.
