Efforts to Secure Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s Release Intensify as Clemency Request Submitted to White House
A formal clemency request for the release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui has been submitted to the White House, urging President Joe Biden to grant her freedom before his term concludes on January 20.
According to sources in Washington, a team of legal representatives has called on President Biden to utilize his presidential powers of clemency. The request aims to secure Dr. Siddiqui’s release before the transfer of power to the next administration.
In a significant diplomatic move, a Pakistani delegation led by Senator Bushra Anjum Butt visited the United States to advocate for Dr. Siddiqui’s release. The delegation held a series of high-profile meetings with U.S. lawmakers and officials, including Congressman Jim McGovern, who chairs a key congressional committee, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen, and Elizabeth Horst, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs.
During these meetings, the delegation underscored the urgent need for Dr. Siddiqui’s release, emphasizing humanitarian grounds and the impact it could have on U.S.-Pakistan relations. The discussions reportedly centered on the legal, diplomatic, and human rights aspects of the case.
Members of the Pakistani-American community have confirmed that the clemency petition has reached the White House. One community representative expressed optimism, stating, “We are hopeful that President Biden will make a decision before the transfer of power on January 20.”
Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s case has been a longstanding point of contention between Pakistan and the United States. Convicted in 2010 by a U.S. court on charges of attempted murder of U.S. personnel in Afghanistan, Dr. Siddiqui’s imprisonment has sparked protests and calls for her release from human rights activists, Pakistani officials, and members of the global Muslim community.
As the countdown to President Biden’s final days in office continues, all eyes remain on the White House for a possible decision on the clemency request. The outcome could mark a pivotal moment in U.S.-Pakistan diplomatic relations and a significant milestone for human rights advocates seeking justice for Dr. Siddiqui.
