Dubai Launches AI Pilot to Detect Smoking in Taxis

Dubai is piloting a new initiative to combat smoking in taxis using artificial intelligence (AI), the city’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Monday. The system will leverage in-car cameras to detect smoking, as smoking is banned in all public transportation across the UAE.

While the RTA did not specify the exact AI technology to be used, the pilot program will focus on improving the cleanliness of more than 500 airport taxis, with the introduction of “high-quality air fresheners.”

In addition to the AI system, the RTA will intensify inspection campaigns across taxis and step up awareness and training programs for drivers and instructors at local driving schools. Adel Shakri, director of Planning and Business Development at the Public Transport Agency, emphasized the importance of these initiatives in maintaining vehicle cleanliness and promoting public awareness.

This move is part of Dubai’s broader efforts to enhance passenger experience and enforce cleanliness standards in public transport.
