Curfew Imposed in Manipur After Violent Protests Over Ethnic Violence
November 16, 2024: Authorities in Manipur, a northeastern state in India, have imposed a curfew and suspended internet and mobile services after violent protests broke out on Saturday. The protests were sparked by ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
The latest violence followed the discovery of three bodies believed to be from the Meitei community. The bodies were reportedly part of a family captured by the Kuki group. This has led to further anger and unrest, with protesters demanding meetings with lawmakers.
Since May 2023, over 250 people have been killed, and around 60,000 people have been displaced in Manipur due to clashes over government quotas for jobs and education. On Saturday, protesters stormed lawmakers’ homes, set vehicles on fire, and damaged property when their demands were ignored.
To prevent more violence, the government imposed an indefinite curfew and shut down internet services. The situation in the state remains tense as authorities try to control the unrest.
