Canada’s New Immigration Policy: Limitations on Temporary Foreign Workers and Student Visas

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that his government will cut the number of temporary foreign workers in Canada. In a statement on social media platform X, Trudeau explained that new regulations will require companies to prove why they cannot hire local workers for available jobs.

This announcement follows Canada’s earlier decision to limit the number of visas issued to international students, which took effect last month.

According to the Canadian government, these temporary measures will be in place for two years, with a review of the policy scheduled before the issuance of study permits in 2025.

Under the new policy, only the spouses of international students enrolled in master’s and doctoral programs will be eligible for open work permits. In contrast, the spouses of undergraduate and college program international students will no longer qualify for open work permits.
