Bangladesh Faces Rice Crisis After Floods Destroy 1.1 Million Metric Tons of Crops

Dhaka: Recent floods in Bangladesh have devastated the country’s agricultural sector, damaging around 1.1 million metric tons of rice crops and leaving eight people dead and over 200,000 affected. According to the Bangladeshi Ministry of Agriculture, this year’s rice production has been severely impacted, leading the government to urgently import 500,000 tons of rice to address the looming food shortage.

Floods in August and October particularly ravaged the eastern and northern regions, with total agricultural losses across the country estimated at 45 billion takas ($380 million). Bangladesh, the world’s third-largest rice producer, is also facing a surge in food prices, with a 20 percent increase in recent months. The interim government is working to stabilize the prices of essential food and beverages in response to the crisis.
