At Least 13 Dead as Building Collapses in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
DAR ES SALAAM, Nov 17 – A building collapsed in Tanzania’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, on Saturday morning, killing at least 13 people and injuring dozens more, according to President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The four-storey building, located in the Kariakoo market area in eastern Dar es Salaam, came down around 9 a.m. local time (0600 GMT).
In a televised address on Sunday, President Hassan confirmed that over 80 people were rescued from the rubble and taken to nearby hospitals. Of those rescued, 26 remain hospitalized, though their conditions were not immediately specified. Rescue operations continued into Sunday as emergency teams searched for survivors.
The cause of the collapse is still under investigation, but building collapses have been a recurring issue in the region, often linked to construction practices and inadequate enforcement of safety regulations.
