Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby Resigns Over Abuse Scandal
London, November 12, 2024 – Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has resigned after a report revealed he failed to properly investigate allegations of abuse by a volunteer at Christian summer camps many years ago.
The report, released last week, found that Welby, who is the most senior leader of the Church of England, did not take enough action to stop one of the Church’s most notorious serial abusers.
In a statement, Welby said he was “sorrowful” for not ensuring a proper investigation into the abuse and accepted full responsibility for the Church’s failure to act.
The scandal has sparked growing calls for Welby’s resignation. Victims of abuse have criticized the Church for its lack of response over the years.
Welby has been Archbishop since 2013 and has previously worked to address abuse issues within the Church. However, this latest revelation has cast a shadow over his leadership.
The Church of England has not yet named a temporary replacement for Welby. The resignation highlights ongoing concerns about how the Church handles abuse cases and the impact on victims.
