Absences of Senior Judges Cast Shadow Over Chief Justice Isa’s Full Court Farewell
Today marks the final day of Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s tenure as Pakistan’s top judge, commemorated with a farewell Full Court Reference. The event, held at 10:30 a.m. in Supreme Court Courtroom No. 1, was attended by Chief Justice Isa, incoming Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, and 16 other justices.
In his farewell remarks, Chief Justice Isa expressed gratitude for the presence of his wife and reflected on his career journey. He thanked those who supported him, including the late Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, who appointed him to the Balochistan High Court. He recalled his early life challenges, sharing memories of his father’s passing when he was only 16 and how his mother encouraged him to pursue his studies.
Attorney General Mansoor Awan also spoke, highlighting Justice Isa’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, defending human rights, and his dedication to preserving judicial independence. He noted Chief Justice Isa’s efforts in ensuring intelligence agencies operated within legal limits, refraining from political interference, and credited him for making historic rulings, including the landmark Faizabad sit-in decision supporting lawful protest.
Incoming Chief Justice Yahya Afridi praised Justice Isa, noting his approachable nature yet cautioning that his temper is formidable if provoked. This statement brought smiles and laughter to the courtroom, with Chief Justice Isa joining in.
Following Chief Justice Isa’s farewell speech, the Full Court Reference concluded.
