Belgian Woman Sets New Record by Running a Marathon Every Day for a Year
Hilda Dossogne, a 55-year-old Belgian bioengineer working in a chemical company, has accomplished an extraordinary feat by running a marathon (42.5 kilometers) every single day for an entire year. She has become the first woman in history to achieve this remarkable milestone.
Key Highlights of Her Achievement
- Total Distance Covered: 15,444 kilometers (9,596 miles) in 365 days.
- Fundraising: Raised €60,000 for breast cancer research.
- Challenges Faced: Battled through flu, COVID-19, joint pain, and extreme weather conditions without taking a single day off.
- Running Track: Most of her runs took place around a water-surrounded track near Ghent University Town, often battling strong headwinds.
Journey to the Guinness World Record
Dossogne is now working to have her achievement officially recognized by Guinness World Records. This process involves submitting GPS data, video evidence, and testimonials from independent witnesses. If approved, she could officially hold the record within three months.
Existing Records in Marathon Running
- Men’s Record: Hugo Fray from Brazil ran a marathon daily for 366 days in 2023.
- Previous Women’s Record: Australian Archana Murray Bartlett held the record for running daily marathons for 150 consecutive days in 2023.
Health and Mental Resilience
Dossogne’s feat was as much a mental challenge as a physical one. Speaking to the media, she explained, “The toughest part is the mental pressure. No matter how you feel, you must show up every day and run for four hours straight. It demands incredible consistency and determination.”
Her perseverance was tested through illnesses and injuries, but she refused to let these obstacles deter her from completing her mission.
Beyond the Marathon
In addition to her running accomplishment, Dossogne’s fundraising efforts have significantly contributed to breast cancer research, highlighting her commitment to making a broader impact.
