Virat Kohli Fined 20% of Match Fee for Incident with Australian Batter
Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has been fined 20% of his match fee following an on-field altercation with Australian batter Sam Konstas during the Boxing Day Test match in Melbourne. The incident occurred on the first day of the match, where Australia’s captain Pat Cummins elected to bat after winning the toss.
The Incident
The altercation unfolded in the 10th over when the 19-year-old debutant Sam Konstas walked over to speak with his partner Usman Khawaja. As Konstas moved forward, Kohli collided shoulders with him, leading to a verbal exchange. Umpire Michael Gough and Usman Khawaja intervened to diffuse the situation.
Australian broadcaster Seven Network’s commentators labeled Kohli as the instigator, stating, “The batter essentially owns the pitch during overs, and Kohli’s actions were clearly uncalled for.”
Jasprit Bumrah Under Pressure
Earlier in the match, Konstas displayed an aggressive batting style against India’s fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. He scored 32 runs off Bumrah’s two overs using innovative shots like reverse scoops, leaving the Melbourne crowd and commentators in awe.
Criticism from Michael Vaughan
Former England captain Michael Vaughan also criticized Kohli for his behavior, saying, “At 36 years of age, Kohli’s conduct towards a 19-year-old debutant was unbecoming of an experienced cricketer. Kohli clearly initiated the confrontation.”
Konstas’ Reaction
During a water break, Konstas downplayed the incident, stating, “Whatever happens on the ground stays on the ground. I enjoy competing, especially in front of a packed stadium.” Konstas went on to score 60 runs off 65 balls, including two sixes and six fours, before being dismissed LBW by Ravindra Jadeja.
