Syria’s New Government Announces Transitional Period After Assad’s Ouster

The spokesperson for Syria’s new government has announced that the country’s constitution and parliament will remain suspended for a three-month transitional period following the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad.

According to reports, Ubaidah Arnaout stated, “A judicial and human rights committee will be established to review the constitution and propose amendments.” The current constitution, established in 2012, does not designate Islam as the state religion.

In an interview with AFP, the spokesperson for Syria’s new government revealed that a meeting will be held on Tuesday between ministers from the Assad administration’s ‘Salvation Government’ and former ministers to ensure a smooth transition of power. “This interim period will last for three months, with a priority on protecting institutions,” Arnaout added.

Speaking from the headquarters of state television, which is now under the control of the new militant authorities, Ubaidah Arnaout pledged to uphold “the rule of law.”

He further stated that individuals who committed crimes against the Syrian people would be held accountable according to the law.

When asked about religious and personal freedoms, he emphasized, “We respect Syria’s religious and cultural diversity, and there will be no changes in this regard.”

On Sunday, militants led by the Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham seized control of the capital, Damascus, forcing President Bashar al-Assad to flee the country.

Following the militant takeover, Assad and his family sought refuge in Moscow, Russia, where they were granted asylum on humanitarian grounds.

On Tuesday, Mohammad al-Bashir announced in a televised address that he had been appointed as the interim prime minister of Syria’s transitional government.

Following the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad, Mohammad al-Bashir was tasked with forming the interim government. He is set to hold the position until March 1, 2025.
