Govt Employees Bound by New Social Media Rules

In a move to control the narrative and maintain a unified voice, the government has issued a sweeping ban on its employees speaking to the media or sharing their opinions on social media platforms without explicit permission.

According to a leaked office memorandum from the Establishment Division, government employees are now prohibited from expressing any opinion or fact that could potentially harm the government’s reputation, policies, or decisions. The gag order also extends to discussions that may impact relations with other countries or compromise the neutrality of civil servants.

The memo warns that any violation of these rules will be considered misconduct, punishable by disciplinary action. Government institutions are tasked with continuously monitoring social media platforms to remove objectionable content and ensure compliance from all federal secretaries, additional secretaries, heads of departments, and chief secretaries.

While the government claims the guidelines are not intended to restrict the positive use of social media, critics argue that the move is a blatant attempt to stifle free speech and maintain a tight grip on information.”
