John Thune Elected Senate Majority Leader as Republicans Shift Leadership

WASHINGTON — South Dakota Senator John Thune has been elected as the next Senate majority leader, marking a significant change in Republican leadership. Thune, a 63-year-old lawmaker in his fourth term, will step into the top Senate position, replacing Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, who has held the role for years.

In a leadership vote among GOP senators, Thune won majority support over two competitors — Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Rick Scott of Florida. Thune’s election comes as Republicans take control of the Senate with 53 seats following the recent elections.

Thune, who has pledged to work closely with President-elect Donald Trump, will play a pivotal role in advancing the incoming president’s policy agenda. Despite past differences with Trump, Thune is expected to collaborate with the White House to push through key legislative initiatives.
