China Removes Memorials After Deadly Car Attack in Zhuhai
ZHUHAI, China, Nov 13 (Reuters) – Authorities in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai cleared away wreaths, candles, and alcohol bottles that had been left as tributes at the site of a deadly car attack. The attack, which occurred on Monday, is the deadliest mass killing in China in a decade.
According to police, the attack was carried out by a man angered by his divorce settlement. He drove his car into a crowd outside a sports center in Zhuhai, a city of 2.5 million people, killing 35 and injuring 43 others. The government took nearly a day to publicly confirm the death toll.
In response to growing online outrage, the Chinese authorities swiftly removed the memorial items and began efforts to control the narrative surrounding the tragedy.
