Philippines Says It Would Comply if Interpol Seeks Duterte’s Arrest
Manila, Nov 13 – The Philippine government said on Wednesday it would not prevent former President Rodrigo Duterte from surrendering to the International Criminal Court (ICC) if he chooses to do so. The government also stated that it would be obligated to comply if Interpol sought Duterte’s arrest in connection with his controversial war on drugs.
During a congressional hearing on the deadly crackdown that left thousands of Filipinos dead, Duterte declared he was not afraid of the ICC and urged the court to “hurry up” with its investigation into potential crimes against humanity related to the drug war.
The ICC has been investigating Duterte’s actions during his presidency, which included widespread extrajudicial killings in the fight against illegal drugs. Duterte has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and has remained defiant toward international scrutiny.
