Violence at Ecuador’s Litoral Prison Leaves 15 Dead
Quito, Ecuador, November 12, 2024 – A fight between inmates at Ecuador’s Litoral Penitentiary in Guayaquil has left at least 15 people dead and 14 others injured, authorities said on Tuesday.
The prison, which has seen several deadly riots in the past, was the scene of another violent outbreak. While officials have not said what caused the fight, police and military forces were sent to regain control of the facility.
Helicopters were spotted flying over the prison as ambulances and worried relatives of inmates gathered outside, hoping for news.
The incident is likely to add pressure on President Daniel Noboa, who is running for re-election next year. He has made improving security, including in prisons, a top priority in his campaign.
The Litoral Penitentiary has been known for overcrowding and gang violence, which often leads to such deadly clashes.
