Archbishop of Canterbury Faces Pressure to Resign Over Abuse Scandal

London, Nov 11 (Reuters) – Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury and spiritual leader of the global Anglican Church, is facing growing calls to resign after a report revealed that his institution had covered up widespread abuse of boys and young men.

The report, released last week, highlighted the case of John Smyth, a barrister who ran summer camps for young Christians and was described as the most prolific serial abuser associated with the Church of England. The findings have sparked outrage, with many demanding accountability from Welby, who has served as Archbishop since 2013.

Welby issued a public apology last week following the report, acknowledging the Church’s failure to protect victims. However, the mounting pressure for his resignation underscores the deepening crisis facing the Church as it confronts the fallout from the abuse scandal.
