Taliban to Attend First Major UN Climate Conference Since Taking Power
KABUL (Nov 10, 2024) – Afghan Taliban officials will attend the COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, next week, marking their first participation in a major international event since taking control of Afghanistan in 2021.
The United Nations conference, which brings together global leaders and policymakers to discuss climate change, will be one of the highest-profile multilateral events for the Taliban administration. The group, which seized power in Kabul after two decades of fighting NATO-backed forces, has been largely isolated from the international community since its return to power.
The Taliban’s participation in COP29 signals their growing engagement with international bodies despite ongoing political and diplomatic challenges.
