Messi’s MLS Cup Dream Shattered as Inter Miami Lose to Atlanta United
FORT LAUDERDALE, United States (November 9, 2024) – Lionel Messi’s quest for an MLS Cup title ended abruptly on Saturday as Inter Miami were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, losing 3-2 to Atlanta United.
Despite finishing the regular season with a record points total and winning the Supporters’ Shield, Miami were stunned by Atlanta, who finished ninth in the Eastern Conference.
Miami took the lead early, with Matias Rojas scoring in the 17th minute after Messi’s shot was saved. However, Atlanta quickly equalized, and then took the lead just minutes later with a goal from Jamal Thiare. Thiare added another in the first half, making it 2-1.
Messi scored a header in the 65th minute to bring Miami level, but late in the game, Bartosz Slisz scored the winning goal for Atlanta from a cross to make it 3-2.
Inter Miami’s hopes were dashed as Atlanta advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals, where they will face Orlando City. The other semifinal will see New York Red Bulls play New York City FC.
